The complex nature of parental influence

10th May 2024

⭐ PICK OF THE WEEK ⭐

A fascinating article in the Guardian online reporting on the publication of a study which suggests we aren’t as much like our parents as we’d previously thought. The study looked at more than 1,000 pairs of relatives to establish how likely children are to inherit five specific personality traits, concluding that the chance of a child sharing a personality trait with a parent is not that much greater than sharing it with a random stranger. Critics of the study have apparently already identified shortcomings, and the debate about the relative importance of genes and environment – nature vs nurture – continues.
